An ivory okimono of Oniwakamaru and carp
By Yamaguchi (Chikuyosai) Tomochika III, Meiji Period
Comprising the young warrior Musashibo Benkei, wrestling with a giant carp, standing with one foot firmly placed on the fish's tail, one arm wrapped around the fish's body and his right hand gripping a knife, signed Tomochika. 18.2cm (7 1/8in) high.

    The artist Yamaguchi (Chikuyosai) Tomochika, is a known netsuke-shi (netsuke carver), a pupil of Shominsai Chikamasa. The name Tomochika is known to have passed down through at least three generations. The artist is also recorded in Tokyo Zoge Chokoku Bijutsu Hyo (A Table of the Art of Ivory Carvings in Tokyo), printed in Meiji 19 (1886).
