A large ivory tusk vase and cover
By Yamauchi, Meiji Period
Boldly carved in relief with a continuous design of an elephant being attacked by five snarling tigers, the mammal gripping one predator by its trunk and stamping down a second underfoot, whilst a third tiger clambers over its back, two more prowling at its rear; the cover carved with two tigers and surmounted by a finial in the form of a monkey holding a branch of persimmon fruit, signed in a square reserve Yamauchi; supported on a detachable wood stand.
Overall 37.5cm (14¾in) high (3).
