Seated, leaning forward, its body slightly curled as it scratches its ear with one hind paw, its curly tail trailing beneath, the slightly-worn wood bears a good patina and the eye pupils are inlaid, signed with ukibori characters Tomin. 4.8cm (1⅞in).

    The work is almost identical to a netsuke by Tanaka Minko, showing the close link between the two makers, illustrated by Rosemary Bandini, Shishi and Other Netsuke: the Collection of Harriet Szechenyi, London, 1999, p.16, no.24, and subsequently sold in these rooms, The Harriet Szechenyi Collection of Japanese Art, 8th November 2011, lot 25.
