A fine powerfully-rendered wood netsuke of a shishi
Kyoto, late 18th century
Seated with head turned down to the left as it bites on the stalk of a large peony held by one raised forepaw, its curly tail erect and its legs drawn in for compactness, the slightly-worn wood bears a good patina and the eye pupils are inlaid, unsigned.
5.1cm (2in).
