The Dragon King conventionally shown with a fierce expression, wearing his dragon head-dress, with the claw-like hands gripping the entire length of his body, standing and holding with both hands the sacred tide jewel, the pale hinoki wood bearing traces of coloured pigment and gesso, unsigned; with wood storage box. 10.2cm (4in) high.     The model is one illustrated with three views in Inaba Tsuryu, Soken Kisho, Osaka, first published in 1781.

    Compare with an almost identical figure of Ryujin in the Baron Go Seinosuke collection, illustrated by Hirokazu Arakawa, The Go collection of Netsuke, Tokyo National Museum, 1983, p.9, figs.1 and 2 and another very similar example in the Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection of Netsuke, sold at Christie's Los Angeles, part III, 28th January, 1989, lot no.20.
