Style of Kokeisai Sansho, late 19th/early 20th century Shown with a scowling expression, crisply carved in the pale, lightly-stained wood, signed later on the bar himotoshi with a kao. 4.2cm (1⅝in).
木彫面根付 鬼 無銘（花押）（虎渓斎三笑式） 19世紀後期/20世紀前期
The work shows strong affinities with that of Kokeisai Sansho (1871-1936), who lived in Osaka and whose life and work is discussed by Boris Filatov in the International Netsuke Society Journal, vol.32, no.1, Spring 2012. The style is that shown in the masks illustrated in the article, nos.14 and 15, although the kao on the present example does not appear to be recorded.
