Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Joseph Klein Collection, formed in New York between 1941 and 1980. Thence by descent.

    Literature:
It is possible that the figure was indeed meant to represent a Muse as the drapery is very similar to that of a figure of Thalia, the Muse of theatre, in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. Similar drapery is also worn by the Muse Melpomene in the Hermitage, St Petersburg (accession no. 8669).
