Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Swiss private collection, formed in the 1960s-1970s.

    Literature:
The ichthys (fish) was a sign used by the early Christians living in the Roman Empire and was widely employed throughout the empire on sculpture and other media from the reign of Constantine onwards. The combination of egg-and-dart with radiating tongues was a commonly-used motif and in the Early Christian and Byzantine period was particularly employed at the top of an arch on stelai and reliefs.
