Depicted gazing slightly to his left, veristically carved with mature features, his brow furrowed, with thin lips, the details of the closely-cropped hair and the beard incised, with deep-set eyes and articulated pupils and irises, 9½in (24.1cm) high, mounted

    The style of the beard and hair, as well as the treatment of the eyes, are distinctive of mid-3rd Century A.D. portraiture.
