With an elaborate high peaked coiffure composed of rows of tight drilled curls rising from her forehead, of mature years, realistically carved, her neck with Venus rings, probably from a funerary altar or relief, the back roughly hewn, 18in (45.7cm) high, mounted

    Literature:
    This hairstyle is particularly associated with the Empress Domitia, the wife of the Emperor Domitian. For an example from Terracina in the Museo Nazionale delle Terme, Rome, cf. D. Kleiner, Roman Sculpture, Yale, 1992, p. 179, fig. 148.

    This portrait head appears to have come from a funerary altar or relief carved in very high relief. For similar cf. the funerary altar of Cominia Tyche in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, (38.227).
