Footnotes

  • Provenance:
American private collection of an old founding family in San Francisco, acquired in the 1950s from the New York art market.

    Literature:
This fragment was likely to be part of a larger group of a dancing satyr or Dionysus. Panthers are often associated with Dionysiac iconography since they were thought to be the animals drawing the god's chariot. A group of a drunken Dionysus leaning on a satyr with a panther is in the Ludovisi Collection at Palazzo Altemps, Rome, accession no. 8606.
