Footnotes

  • This extremely fine purse is executed in a soft palette on fine silk with a type of decoration which appears in the beginning of the 18th century and on a larger scale is used on a child's robe in the Topkapi Saray Museum (Tezcan, H., Children of the Ottoman Saraglio, 2006, p. 235, no. 201).

Three purses of the same workmanship were sold at Sotheby's, Art of the Ottoman Empire, 24 April, 2012, Lot 219. These as well as ours can be dated on the basis of two purses ordered by Cornelis Calkoen, the Dutch Republic's ambassador to the Sublime Porte, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Teske, J. "Embroidery for Ambassadors", The Rijks Museum Bulletin, 2011, p. 66 and 67, figs. 7,8).
