Syria, 17th/ 18th Century
comprising nine tiles, decorated in cobalt blue with a three domed mosque with two towers, each dome with suspended mosque lamp within, beneath the arcades a garden with cypress trees, date palms, a spray of carnations emanating from a vase and three inscription-filled cartouches, above a band of inscription

  • The inscriptions comprise the names Allah, Muhammad and those of the four Caliphs (Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman and 'Ali).

    Panels of this type were most likely intended for the adornment of mosques or private residences. A panel of similar design can be found in the Brooklyn Museum, New York (accession number 2002.3).
