Turkey, early 17th Century

Footnotes

  • A number of these wicker shields are in the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe captured as Turkenbeute by Europeans in battles against the Ottomans in the later 17th century. Designed as protection against arrows, and relatively useless against the musket fire of the period, it is thought these shields were carried by the Ottoman as a recreation of the campaigns of Suleyman the Magnificent who swept through Eastern Europe in the 16th century.

Such shields rarely appear at auction: for two examples, see Sotheby's, The Turkish Sale, 17 October 1997, lot 82; and Sotheby's, Arts of the Ottoman Empire, 24 April 2012, lot 167.
