Footnotes

  • The pattern of the openwork on this crown may be seen on a 13th century mirror attributable to Fars in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. M14-1950) and is an early geometric pattern widely used on early Islamic Iranian bell-metal wares. The same mirror also features puffy-cheeked figures wearing tri-lobed crowns much like ours, of a type which may be seen on Iranian wares of the 13th century (Melikian-Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World 8-18th Centuries, London, 1982, no. 105, p. 230).
