Footnotes

  • Provenance: UK private collection; acquired directly from the artist in the mid 1970s.

Fahrelnissa Zeid wrote of a moment during her first trip to Baghdad, as she looked through the window of the White Palace: "I could see, at dawn, a distant road coloured with the orange hue of morning light. Then I saw six or seven forms coming from the horizon, as if flying over the sands. I was frozen, stiff with fright. They carried on their heads pyramid shaped piles of yogurt jars and, from afar they looked like tall chimney stacks.... And their veils were waving in this golden, burning light." (quoted in Parinaud, Andre, Fahr El Nissa Zeid, Amman 1994, p. 38).
