Footnotes

  • Provenance: Private UK Collection.

This claret jug is a fine example of Oomersi Mawji's best work. There is another known example of this spectacular jug, with its distinctive snake and charmer handle; formerly in the Paul Walters Collection and now in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Museum in Richmond, Virginia. It is currently on display as part of the exhibition 'Indian Silver from the Raj' until 3 February, 2013. It is also illustrated in V. Dehejia, Delight in Design: Indian Silver for the Raj, India 2008, (no. 39, pg. 129) and has been referred to as 'a superb example of the work of Oomersee Mawjee and represents the best of Kutch silverwork'.

The humorous touch of the snake being charmed up the branch by a snake charmer demonstrates the silversmith's confidence and absolute understanding of the requirements of his subject. Produced during the final period of the British Raj in India, the jug represents a true confluence of styles wherein a European form has been enhanced by indigenous Kutchi decorative motifs.
