Two copper Basins
possibly Deccan, late 18th Century
of compressed globular form with slightly tapering neck and everted rim, body with band of flower-filled trefoil motifs, calligraphic inscription to neck and engraved in concentric circles to base; the other basin of squat form with inward sloping shoulder and flaring rim, decorated with floriated split palmettes around body, smaller bands of repeating palmettes to shoulder, band of calligraphic inscription to neck

  • The inscriptions comprise: Around the neck of the first basin, owner's name as 'Its owner Vali bin 'Ali Bayg'; on its base the call to God to bless the Prophet Muhammad and the Twelve Imams; Around the neck of the second basin, the call to God to bless the Fourteen Innocents; an owner's seal-like stamp as 'Its owner Haji Murshidi; a Shi'a prayer in Arabic (with a Persian instruction that it is for a barber for his weekly Wednesday ablutions) invoking God in the name of the Prophet Muhammad, Imam 'Ali, Fatima, Imam Hasan, Imam Husayn and his sons, followers and servants.
