Lot Details
A prince and his mistress in an erotic embrace on a terrace MANIJEH Murshidabad, late 18th Century
A prince and his mistress in an erotic embrace on a terrace
Murshidabad, circa 1760
gouache and gold on paper, verso a Persian quatrain by Muhammad Zahid in nasta'liq script on a gold ground, album page with gold-sprinkled borders
173 x 115 mm.

Footnotes

  • The Persian quatrain (the author of which is unidentified) was 'copied for a dear one' by Muhammad Zahid. According to M. Bayani (vol. 3, p. 739), he was an obscure calligrapher of the 16th Century. Two calligraphic pages, neither dated, are recorded. An album page signed as 'Muhammad Zahid Samarqani', dated AH 1001/AD 1592 and attributed to Mughal India was sold at Sotheby's, April 1985, lot 91 (not illustrated). The verso of this album page bears a calligraphy by Mir 'Ali al-Katib, dated AH 983/AD 1575. It seems likely that the present lot is not Mughal, whereas the Sotheby's piece may have been compiled in Mughal India.
