Footnotes

  • Jawan Singh was a ruler held in high regard by the British, according to Sir Charles Metcalfe, Resident at Delhi touring Rajasthan in 1826, but he nevertheless contributed to the decline of the once-powerful Udaipur during his ten-year reign. However, the artists Ghasi and the celebrated Tara flourished during this period under his patronage. For further discussion see A. Topsfield, Paintings from Rajasthan in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne 1980, p. 14, pp. 149-156; A. Topsfield, Court Painting at Udaipur, 2001, pp. 234-252.
