Zebrowski observes that many provincial Deccani portraits cannot be attributed to any particular centre. Patrons away from Hyderabad were often keen to support their local artists, who were well able to add personality and character to their commissions. Individual portraits such as this in a sense provide the viewer with a more idiosyncratic view than more run-of-the mill examples being produced at Hyderabad at around the same time. See M. Zebrowski, Deccani Painting, London 1983, pp. 276-279, pls. 259-262.
