Suad al-Attar (Iraq, b. 1942) A seated woman winding wool
oil on canvas, signed and dated 1964 in Arabic lower right, inscribed on the reverse by the artist in May 2012, framed 43 x 28.5 cm.
Provenance: Private UK collection. Acquired by the vendor's aunt and uncle, who were working in Iraq at the time of Suad al-Attar's first solo show at the Red Crescent in Baghdad in March 1964.
The inscription, made by the artist on inspection of the painting at Bonhams in May 2012, reads: "Suad Al-Attar/ painted in Baghdad 1964. Exhibited in my first solo show at 'Red Crescent Hall'/ May 2012", and signed in Arabic.
A newspaper review from The Iraq Times dated March 27th 1964 says of the show: "In her recent works, Suad al-Attar is out to startle, dazzle and fascinate. Here she is more mature and more accomplished - her lines are delicate, but firm, her colours masterly and her forms beautiful."
