the curved blade of watered steel, with inlaid gold inscription cartouches either side, the hilt with horn facings, curving pommel and crossguard with bud quillons, the leather-covered scabbard with the lock and chape incised with foliate motif borders

  • The inscriptions comprise: in the lobed tear-shaped cartouche; bandeh-ye shah-e velayat soleyman; 'The servant of King of trusteeship, Sulayman'; in the horizontal cartouche: 'Work of Asadullah Isfahani'; in the square, 4 letters that make the talismanic word buduh.

    There are two Safavids with the name Sulayman: Sulayman I (1077-1105/1666-94) and Sulayman II (1163/1750), the latter a governor under the Afsharid dynasty.

    This composite sword illustrates the common practice of re-using blades which were of special importance or high quality.
