Footnotes

  • According to the records, the Sèvres factory started to produce such vases referred to as vases à monter or as gobelets à monter from 1764. The main forms of such vases were tapering cylindrical, such as in the present lot, or egg-shaped. These vases were produced to be sold as garnitures to marchand-merciers who adorned them with ormolu-mounts. Amongst the marchand-merciers, the names of Dulac, Poirier, Daguerre and Duplessis fils can be found.

The earlier vases were glazed in solid ground colors and by 1770 some pieces were decorated with green and blue grounds scattered with foliate wreaths.

A three-piece assembled garniture with a very similar central vase and a pair of smaller egg-shaped vases sold Christies London, 9th June 2005, lot 1, for £31,200.
Another comparable vase with lion's masks is in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, illustrated in L.H Roth and C. Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth Century Porcelain at the Wadworth Atheneum: The J.Pierpont Morgan Collection, 2000, p.156.

A closely related three-piece garniture, formerly in the collection of Mme Jules Fribourg, is illustrated in S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, 1974, p. 363.
