A pair of George III gilt-brass vase candlesticks, attributed to Matthew Boulton
the foliate-cast reversible tops revealing leaf decorated and fluted sconces, the bodies with guilloche rims above laurel swags, the acanthus-cast spreading stems, on square plinths applied with floral swags, on bun feet, 6cm wide, 20cm high (2" wide, 7.5" high).

  • The present candlestick vases are of a very similar model to a pair sold Christie's London, 6 July 1995, lot 5, illustrated in Nicholas Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, 2002, p. 291, pl. 248. The offered lot also closely relates to Boulton's pattern for a candlestick vase illustrated Ibid., pl. 250. Further comparable examples include a pair with laurel drapery swags similar to those here (see Nicholas Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, 1974, pl. 115) and a pair with yellow marble bodies sold Christie's, London, 10 April 1986, lot 2.
