Lot Details
A French late 17th century mother of pearl, engraved pewter and brass inlaid ivory and boxwood casket
of waisted form, the hinged lid opening to a velvet lined interior fitted with a later tulipwood cigar compartment, inlaid overall with Berainesque foliate cartouches and scrolls, 23.5cm wide, 13.5cm deep, 16.5cm high (9" wide, 5" deep, 6" high).

  • Pierre Gole (1620-1684) Born in Bergen, North Holland. A French cabinetmaker of Dutch birth. Pierre Gole (Pieter Goolen) moved to Paris in the 1640's and worked under Adrien Garbrant. After receiving his first major commission from King Louis XIV to furnish an expansion of His palace at Versailles. He maintained a good relationship with the Royal workshop on matters of interior design. It was from such commisions, that his work became characterized by rich decoration with inlays of various woods and materials like tortoishell, ivory, pewter and brass.

    The Berainesque foliate cartouches and scrolls achived through the use of mother of pearl, engraved pewter and brass inlaid ivory is inkeeping with the work and designs of Pierre Gole.

VAT at 20% will be payable on the amount of the premium.
