Footnotes

  • These urns were purchased from Swallowfield Park by the present owner. They were part of the sale Swallowfield Park: An Important Sale of the Remaining Furnishings, Wednesday 13th October 1965 (a copy of the original receipt can be provided).

They feature in an article in The Connoisseur, March 1926, pages 153-155 under the title Relics of Queen Marie Antoinette by the late Constance, Lady Russell of Swallowfield. The article states that a Sir Henry Russell married a French lady whose relations were connected to the court of Louis XVI, and therefore came to own several works of art previously belonging to Marie Antoinette from Le Petit Trianon. Lady Russell states that these urns came from there, and describes them as Jasper with ormolu mounts. An illustration showing one of the urns on a commode is also included in the article.

Swallowfield Park remained in the Russell family throughout the 19th century, and was documented by Constance, Lady Russell in her 1901 book entitled Swallowfield and Its Owners (Longmans, Green, Meo, 1901). Following her death in 1925, the property went to her son, Sir Arthur Edward Ian Montagu Russell, the 6th Baronet. After his death in 1964 the property and contents were sold at auction, where the present vendor purchased these urns for £126.
