A French mid-19th century marble mounted oak and walnut breakfront cabinet
in the manner of Auguste-Hippolyte Sauvrezy
the architectural top centred by an oval medallion surmounted by a winged mask issuing drapery, above a pair of fruit-filled cornucopias, above a central spring-release drawer fronted by a lion's head flanked by scrolling foliage, above a cupboard door with arched panel depicting Diane and Acteon, the interior with one shelf, flanked to each side by a pair of fluted columns each centred by a standing figure, the secret cupboard doors each fitted with four drawers, above a further three drawers fronted by lion's masks and winged heads, the base with three frieze drawers, above a cupboard door with arched panel depicting a standing figure emblematic of Peace, the interior fitted with a shelf, flanked to each side by a pair of fluted columns, on bun feet, 112cm wide, 53cm deep, 218.5cm high (44" wide, 20.5" deep, 86" high).

Footnotes

  • This type of Renaissance style architectural cabinet can be related to International Exhibition pieces of the mid-19th century, particularly to the pieces presented by Parisian workshops at the 1851, 1855 and 1867 Exhibitions.
    The wood-work, carved panels and inserted hard stones are typical of pieces by Auguste-Hippolyte Sauvrezy (1815-1854).
