Footnotes

  • The present bronze was produced in various sizes by Barbedienne, from 36cm up to 96cm. Dubois also created a pendant bronze of similar form but with the child suckling on the left side rather than the right, entitled Maternité. This model is illustrated on page 298 of P. Kjellberg Les Bronzes du XIX Siecle, Les Editions de l'Amateur, Paris.

The original model of Charité was conceived as one of four groups of seated figures to be placed at the corners of the Monument to the Memory of General Juchault de Lamoricière (1806-65), which was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 before being installed in Nantes cathedral.
