Footnotes

  • This bust dervies from the figure of Africa that Carpeaux produced for his Fontaine de l'Observatoire in the Luxembourg Gardens. This centrepiece was formed of four savage women representing the four parts of the world, holding aloft a globe. The terracotta model for the fountain was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1872 to mixed reviews, and is now in the Musée D'Orsay.

A terracotta example of the present bust is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (No. 1997.491), and a bronze version was sold at Christie's, London, 12 May 2009, lot 351.
