circa 1910
with vellum circular back and seat, with geometrical inlay and applied repoussé and pierced copper, signed to the front of the back Bugatti, with old paper label inscribed LE GARDE MEUBLE/18 Rue St Augustin/ BEDEL & Cie numbered 31691, 76cm wide, 53cm deep, 145cm high (29.5" wide, 20.5" deep, 57" high).

Footnotes

  • Born in Milan on 16th February 1856 the son of sculptor and architect Giovanni Luigi Bugatti. Carlo Bugatti trained at the Brera Academy, Milan and later at the Académie des Beaux Arts, Paris. Infuenced by 'New Art' Bugatti became prominent for his highly detailed works in ceramics, silverware and textiles. His furniture was first exhibited at the Fine Arts Fair Milan in 1888. With further furniture displays at international exhibitions in London, Amsterdam and Milan. Bugatti was awarded an honorary prize for his designs in London and built up a following for his furniture in New York with his pieces adorning a stand at the Waldorf Astoria's Turkish Salon.

    A comparable throne sold Christie's, London, 26 October 2006, for £21,600.
