The Apotheosis of Mary Magdalen oil on canvas 65.2 x 48.5cm (25 11/16 x 19 1/8in).
In a letter dated 24 April, 2012 Professor Giancarlo Sestieri writes that the authorship of Luigi Garzi for this painting is 'immediate and clear'. Sestieri dates the present work to the late 1680s, when Garzi painted the two frescoes of the Faith and Musician Angels in Glory for the Church of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso, Rome, showing the clear influence of Giovanni Lanfranco. He further observes that the angels in the present painting are almost interchangeable with Domenichino's angels of the Evangelists at Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, which were copied by Garzi. Garzi's painting Fucina del Vulcano, now in the Lemme Collection, which is a preparatory sketch for the same subject in Palazzo Bonaccorsi, Macerata, contains the same angels.
