LITERATURE: S. Pepper, Guido Reni (Oxford, 1984), cat. no. 88, p. 246, studio variant no. 4. S. Pepper, Guido Reni, L'Opera Completa (Milan, 1988), cat. no. 78, p. 252, as 'copie varianti di studio' no. 3. R. Pallucchini, in 'Experience and Adventures of a Collector' (Paris, 1989), pp. 66-71
This impressive canvas has been considered, at the least, a fine studio version of the celebrated picture by Reni in the Galleria Spinola, Genoa. There are significant differences in the angles and arrangement of the still life elements to the left and Pallucchini has argued that the picture together with the Pepper variant no. 1. in the Museo Civico, Pisa should be considered autograph works (see literature above).
