The present work is derived from Sebastiano del Piombo's original composition, painted between 1516 and 1524 in the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, Rome. Sebastiano used oils and painted on dry rather than wet plaster for the execution of the mural painting, where it is traditionally thought that he may have been assisted by Michelangelo.
