Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
    The Bardini Collection, Florence
Their sale, 10 August 1947, whence acquired by the present owner's family and thence by descent

The present paintings may be compared to a pair on copper (16.5 x 21.6 cm.), which was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 5 June 2008, lot 29. That pair and others by the same hand have traditionally been ascribed to Jan van Kessel the Younger. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, believes this group may be by an, as yet, unidentified hand working in the studio of Jan van Kessel the Elder, possibly his son, Ferdinand van Kessel.
