Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Possibly The Chanenko Collection, Kiev (according to C. Hofstede de Groot, see catalogue note)
With Rumantzeff Gallery, Moscow, no. 530 (Witt Library Mount)
Possibly sale, Frankfurt, 1 October 1905, lot 38
Possibly sale, Frankfurt, 4 November 1916, lot 69
With H.J. Spiller, London, before 1965, and thence by family descent

On the old reproduction of the painting, from the records of Hofstede de Groot, the present work is indicated as coming from the Chanenko Collection, Kiev, no. 530. However, the highest number mentioned in the Chanenko inventory of 1899 is 398. Hofstede de Groot also notes that the painting was then offered in two sales in Frankfurt on 1 October 1905, lot 38, and 4 November 1916, although there appears to be no record of either auction. The confusion over the inventory number in the Chanenko Collection may in some way be explained by the fact that it had the same inventory number when with the Rumantzeff Gallery in Moscow.
