Footnotes

  • This spoon was discovered in the grounds of Loddington Hall, Leics., the family seat of Sir John Pretyman, 1st Bt c, 1612 -1776.
The initials are for those of Elizabeth Pretyman, b. 1630, she was the daughter of Sir John Pretyman and his wife Elizabeth Turpin.

Sir John was descended from a Suffolk family which held land in Bacton since the middle of the 14th century. It was Sir John's father who moved the family to Gloucestershire, however after being cleared of collusion with the royalist forces that took Cirencester, Sir John sold the family home of Driffield and took up residence on his wife's estates in Leicestershire, which he enlarged with the purchase of Loddington. Yet again he was involved with royalist uprising, this time in 1659 with his son, for his endeavours and acclaimed spenditure of £3000 towards to this, he was rewarded with a Nova Scotia baronetcy.
