The rectangular cover with central oval agate panel on a cast and chased ground of shamrocks, acanthus and roses with a raised rocaille border, the sides with a similarly executed band of shamrocks flanked by foliate scrolls, the underside of the cover with an oval insert engraved with a coat of arms, one side lifting to reveal a small compartment (agate to this cover lacking), length 8.7cm.

  • Bennett mentions a Henry GARDNER 1805(?)-1837, clock and watch maker, dentist, silversmith & jeweller, optical and mathematical instrument maker, active in Belfast, see page 209, Irish Georgian Silver (London 1972). Apparently, Gardner sent items for assay in both Dublin and Chester.
