By William Pitts, London 1808
Shaped-circular outline with a gadroon border, the wide rim etched with panels of Greek key motifs within stippled bands edged with foliate scrolls, the border further embellished with four large cartouches edged with ribbon-tied fronds, each applied with a finely chased and embossed in high relief medallion bearing armorial insignia, set on a stippled ground, the centre of the shallow dish decorated with a scheme of steel matrices from Seals of Office in various sizes, all suspended from ribbons and within laurel branch surrounds, with the largest to the centre surrounded by four large and five smaller, with a simulated velvet drape below, centred with an oval cartouche engraved with a monogram, diameter 62.3cm, weight 181oz.

Footnotes

  • The shield, garter and coronet are that of the Most Hon. George Grenville, 3rd Earl Temple and 1st Marquess of Buckingham with the shield and coronet of his wife, Lady Mary Nugent, in pretence on the rim diagonally opposite the marquess's coronet and gartered wheatsheaf crest.

George Grenville (17 June 1753 - 11 Feb 1813) married Lady Mary Nugent on 16 April 1775 and elevated to a Marquesate on 4 Dec 1784 before being invested with the Garter on 2 June 1786.

Alternating with these insignia are a cartouche bearing the arms of GRENVILLE impaling WYNDHAM, opposite the cartouche for GRENVILLE impaling PITT; they represent respectively the 1749 marriage of an earlier George Grenville (1712-1770) to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Wyndham Bt., and the 1792 marriage of William Wyndham Grenville (1759-1834) to Anne, daughter of Thomas Pitt, 1st Baron Camelford.

George Grenville (1712-1770) was MP for Buckingham and served as Secretary for the Navy, First Lord of the Admiralty, and from 1763-5 First Lord of the Treasury and Prime Minister.

William Wyndham Grenville also served as Buckingham's MP, becoming successively Chief Secretary for Ireland, Speaker of the House of Commons, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary before accepting appointment as Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of all the Talents 1806-7.

The bowl of the salver is inset with governmental seals of office held as Ministers during the pre-1801 period of the 1760-1820 reign of George III during the distinguished political careers of these ancestors of the Marquess of Buckingham.
