An early 19th century gold Royal Presentation box
By A J Strachan, London 1805
Rectangular form, the lid inset with an oval lapis lazuli panel on a scroll-chased ground with Greek Key pattern border, the sides and base with diaper engine-turned decoration, inscribed on the underside of the cover: 'This Box was presented by His Majesty King George the 4th, to William Oram Esqr. His son Capt Wm Henry Oram (who died 21st July 1836) Bequeathed it as a token of sincere friendship to Thomas Watford Junr Esqr", length 8.5cm.

  • William Henry Oram, of the Royal Scots Greys served in the Peninsular wars. He was Cornet by purchase, 19 January, 1817; Lieutenant by purchase, 4 April, 1822 and Captain by purchase, 10 June, 1826. He was exchanged to half-pay, unattached, 17 December, 1829. There is a funerary monument to Oram and his wife Ann in St George's Chapel, Windsor.
