Footnotes

  • Based on early Tunbridge prototypes, the shape and decoration of this box, albeit markedly more stylised, reflects the fascination of the period for the rustic and picturesque fashions popular in England and Europe, which in turn spread to the colonies and which resulted in export trade of items interpreted in this style.

See A.Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, p.206 for a very similar example in the collection of the V&A Museum
    (W 20-1951).

For another very similar example sold see Bonhams, London, 27 June 2006, lot 7 and another sold by the late Christopher Rowley, Esq., Wormington Manor, Worcestershire, Sotheby's house sale, 21-22 July 2003, lot 624.
