The moulded rectangular top with a conforming parquetry cavetto frieze, the four waisted foliate carved supports joined by pierced stretchers and with paw feet on later brass and leather castors, some losses to fretwork, 109cm wide, 73cm deep, 79cm high (42.5" wide, 28.5" deep, 31" high).

Footnotes

  • Provenance: Beckley Park, Oxfordshire and thence by family descent.

A related Charles II oak parquetry escritoire on stand with provenance from Walter Lord Cunliffe of Headley sold Sotheby's London, 18 March 1966, lot 87 and then again in the same rooms as part of the Ronald A. Lee Collection, 28 November 2001, lot 40.

Recorded parallels for the use of related oak parquetry in English furniture at this period are extremely rare and besides the Cunliffe cabinet, would appear to be limited to a pair of boxes preserved in St. Alban's Cathedral. Other examples of comparable 17th century oak parquetry decoration is featured in the oak panelling in the Great Chamber and State Rooms at Chatsworth and the reredos of Trinity College, Cambridge.
