Footnotes

  • The splat pattern seen on the above chairs mirrors that seen on a group of chairs thought possibly to have a Northumberland or South Scottish origin. A set of six chairs formerly with The Askew family of Pallinsburn, Northumberland were sold Christie's London, 23 November 2006, lot 54. Another set which were at the time of sale given an Irish origin were sold Christie's London, 6 March 2003, lot 213. A set of chairs with two accompanying settees, forms part of The Lady Lever Collection and are illustrated in L.Wood, The upholstered Furniture in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, London 2008, p.834, item 82.

The above set of chairs also has some features characteristic of early chairs by Gillows of Lancaster. The naturalistically carved, high claw and ball foot is a feature of the earliest recorded chairs by Robert and Richard Gillow made in December 1757. The chairs were ordered by John Bowes, the Lancaster merchant for his son-in-law the Revd. James Pedder of Garstang. See S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Suffolk 2008, p.130, pl.79. A similar claw and ball foot is also found of the set of eight George II mahogany chairs attributed to Gillows thought to have been supplied to the Gillow client Ann Fenwick of Hornby Hall, Lancashire and later with the priest and historian Dr John Lingard at Hornby Presbytery. Lingard was pained by James Lonsdale sitting in one of the armchairs. for the set. These chairs were sold Bonhams London, 3 July 2007, lot 27.The turned single stretcher uniting the back legs also appears on chairs attributed to Gillows from the 1740-760 period included a set attributed to Robert Gillow and still with the Gillow family at Leighton Hall, see S.Stuart, ibid., p.29, pl.10. Other chairs attributed to Gillows with this form of stretcher are also illustrated by Stuart., ibid., p.31. pl.12-13.
