The circular top with lobed edge inset with a panel of radiating specimen marbles including Red Campan Griotte, Verona Red, Sarancolin, Fleur de Pecher, Jasper, Onyx and various fossilised specimens, centred by musical trophies with outer borders inlaid with birds, butterflies and shells, on a black ground, above a bead and reel moulded frieze, on an acanthus leaf carved shaft on cabriole legs carved with riband tied acanthus leaves, on leaf scroll feet, with inset castors, 86cm in diameter, 77cm high (33.5" in diameter, 30" high).

  • Similar acanthus carved baluster supports with gadrooned socles are seen on a pair of goncalo alves card tables attributed to Gillows from The Bracewell Collection, sold Bonhams London, 16 July 2008, lot 130 and illustrated in S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Suffolk 2008,p.263, pl. 267.

    Gillows are known to have supplied tables to support marble slabs purchased in Italy by Stephen Tempest and his family, see S.Stuart, ibid., p.338. Gillow supplied a base for a circular specimen marble slab to Tempest for Broughton Hall, illustrated in S.Stuart, ibid., p.337, pl.391. A table of the Broughton Hall model thought to have been commissioned by Lord St Helens (1753-1839) and by descent to his nephew Sir Henry Fitzherbert (1783-1858) at Tissington Hall was sold Christie's London, 22 January 2009, lot 550.
