Footnotes

  • The stamped numbers to the back legs of these chairs relate to the pattern of stamped numbers used by the Gillow firm between 1870-1899 and would indicate the chairs date of manufacture as 1875.

A pair of related chairs were sold Bonhams London, 16 July 2008, lot 168.

The design for this chair derives from the George II chair at Boyton House in Wiltshire illustrated in P.Maquoid and R.Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1927, Vol.1, p.237, fig. 91. Gillows began to reproduce this model in varying timbers including mahogany and rosewood. A suite of chairs of this form attributed to Gillows and in rosewood were supplied to Nidd Hall, Ripley, Harrogate, formerly the home of Viscount Mountgarret and sold Christie's London, 9 July 1987, lots 60-67. Four side chairs from this suite were later offered by Phillips London, 19 July 1995, lot 18. An example in yew wood appears in the Gillow's Estimate Sketch Books (Westminster City Archives) for 1827, reference 3603, for Ferguson & Co,(see illustration). A pair of yew examples were sold at Christie's New York, 22 April 1989, lot 69.

Susan Stuart illustrates several versions of this chair book, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Suffolk 2008, plates 225, GG15, GG16, B21 and B22.
