The rectangular tiers on ring turned supports surmounted by lobed finials, the third tier supporting a frieze drawer, on bulbous turned bun feet, brass cappings and castors, stamped M.WILLSON, 68 GREAT QUEEN STREET, LONDON, 56cm wide, 41cm deep, 140cm high (22" wide, 16" deep, 55" high).

Footnotes

  • Thomas Willson is recorded as a furniture broker and appraiser at this address 1821-29, and is probably the same Thomas Wilson (one 'l') recorded as an auctioneer at 28 Great Queen Street 1799-1825. It is believed that Willson was a dealer in second-hand furniture who used his stamp as a means of identification (it has, for example, been found on pieces stamped by Gillows of Lancaster). From 1830-1837 the business was continued by Mary Willson & Son and after 1838 by Matthew Willson until 1854 and hence the 'M' Willson stamp may have been used by both Mary and Matthew. The majority of pieces bearing the 'M' Willson stamp seem to date from the 1830's (see C.Gilbert, Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.56).
