  A photograph of Donati in 1952 at the Alexander Iolas Gallery, New York, holding a work of very similar dimensions, technique and composition is illustrated in T.F. Wolff, Enrico Donati, Surrealism and Beyond, New York, 1996, frontispiece. Two further compositions from 1949 in mixed media, of similar proportions but slightly smaller size (The Ball, 8 x 50 cm., and 3rd Shift, 10 x 64 cm.) may indicate a date for the present work (T.F. Wolff, op. cit., pp.62-63).
