    The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by the Comité Derain, Paris.

    This work is an illustration to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's story Citadelle, begun in 1936, unfinished at the time of the author's disappearance in 1944 and published posthumously from an unedited typescript in 1948. An edition of Saint-Exupéry's Oeuvres complets, with illustrations by Derain, Dunoyer de Ségonzac, Edy Legrand and others was published in 1950.
