12mo (171 x 108 mm). [viii], 174, [2] ad pp. Half-title. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title, and 12 in-text vignettes by John Leech and others. Original crimson cloth stamped in gilt and blind, a.e.g. Five line description pasted to front pastedown, boards lightly soiled, mild wear to extremities and edges, spine slightly cocked, still a bright copy.
Provenance: Harriette Holmes and Marianne Armstrong (gift inscription to front free endpaper).

FIRST EDITION. The Cricket on the Hearth was immediately and immensely popular. It doubled the circulation of the previous two Christmas books, and by 1847 was into its twenty-second edition. Eckel pp 125-126; Sadleir 685.
