FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Though subject to much adverse criticism, the book was a commercial success, and into its fourth edition a year after publication. Owing to a last minute decision to pull the preface, in the first issue page xvi represents the tenth page of prelims. Eckel 113-115.
